Common plumbing questions, answered clearly.

This page gives homeowners a cleaner place to find quick answers about estimates, scheduling, water heaters, well pumps, water treatment, service area, and common job questions without cluttering every other page on the site.

Common questions

Quick answers to common questions people ask before they call.

Yes. Estimates are free, including evenings and weekends, with no extra charge.

We can usually give an estimated price over the phone when the scope is clear. Some jobs with more work or special circumstances have to be seen in person before we can give an accurate estimate.

The final price usually only changes if the scope of work increases, more work gets added, hidden problems show up, or material costs come in higher than expected. Outside of that, our estimated prices are usually accurate.

We offer same-day service when we have availability. No-water calls like a broken well pump or an emergency water leak are prioritized.

No. For emergency after-hours and weekend calls, we do not charge an extra fee.

Yes. Customers can supply their own faucets and fixtures, and we can install them. If you prefer, we can also supply the fixture ourselves so the whole job is handled through us.

Customers sometimes underestimate how much access work is involved. For example, adding a hose bib is not just putting something in the wall. A full water line may need to be run to that location, and if walls or a finished basement are involved, the work can be more involved than it first sounds.

Yes. We keep everything code compliant and do the job correctly because Afternoon Plumbing is owned and operated by a licensed Master Plumber.

Leak questions

What to do first when a leak is active and how to tell what kind of leak you may have.

If you have an active water leak, shut off the main water supply valve if you can locate it. In most homes it is in a mechanical room or somewhere in the basement. Then call us so we can help you figure out the next step.

If the leak is constant, it is more likely a water leak. If it only happens intermittently, it is more likely a drain leak. We can help work through that with you on the phone, but that is a good starting clue.

Water heater questions

Common questions around replacement, urgency, and what to expect.

If the water heater is newer and it is not leaking, repair may still make sense. If the tank itself is leaking, replacement is usually the better option.

Yes, sometimes. We do offer same-day water heater replacements when availability allows, especially when a leaking unit needs to be dealt with quickly.

Shut off the cold water valve feeding the heater and close all hot water fixtures. If it is an electric water heater, shut it off at the electrical panel. If it is natural gas or propane, shut off the incoming gas supply at the valve next to the heater. Then call as soon as possible.

Most residential water heaters are 50 gallons, but the right size still depends on the home and hot water usage.

Well pump questions

Helpful answers for no-water calls, pressure problems, and pump replacement questions.

First, make sure there is really no water in the whole house. Sometimes one fixture gets clogged with sediment and makes it seem like there is no water, while other fixtures still have full flow. If the whole house is out, then it is worth checking the well system more closely.

Yes, sometimes. A breaker could be tripped, or a low-pressure pressure switch may need to be reset. If the pressure switch is sending voltage out toward the well pump and the house still has no water, then it is more likely to be a pump or wiring issue.

Yes. No-water calls are high priority, and we will move the schedule around when possible to help get people water again.

Water treatment questions

Questions homeowners ask about filtration, conditioning, and better water quality.

A whole-house water filter is mainly for sediment. An acid neutralizer is there to neutralize the pH of your water and help protect your fixtures. A water softener is for hardness. Many homes with an acid neutralizer end up needing a water softener too, because neutralizing the water can increase hardness and leave hard spots on fixtures and sinks.

Most estimates for water softeners, filters, or treatment systems include the housing itself, the media or fill material such as calcite or salt if needed, and the filter components that go with the setup. We explain what is included to the customer.

Yes. The right recommendation depends on the actual water problem. Different issues point toward different treatment equipment, and we explain that during the estimate process.

Yes. We explain what is included in the estimate so customers understand what equipment, materials, and treatment components are part of the job.

Hose bib and exterior plumbing questions

Common questions about leaking outdoor faucets, frost-free replacements, and exterior plumbing concerns.

Replacement is often the better move when an outdoor faucet keeps leaking, has freeze damage, or is old enough that a frost-free upgrade makes more sense than patching the same problem again.

A frost-free hose bib is designed to help reduce freeze-related damage by placing the shutoff point farther back inside the wall instead of near the exterior handle.

Yes. Ongoing leaks can waste water and point to a faucet or connection that should be replaced before the problem gets worse.
